Acupuncture represents an ancient Chinese medical procedure used for centuries to treat a number of diseases. According to traditional Chinese medicine, the human body contains life energy - chi, which travels through the body along the defined meridians, and controls all the vital functions. Stimulation of certain positions along the meridians can help in regulating the energy and to cure. The interest in this procedure in previous decades has become increasingly larger, so it is now used as a valid, accepted and complementary medical intervention in leading world clinics. In the treatment of infertility, the use of acupuncture may show some benefit if used in the procedure of In vitro fertilization (IVF). Observations from the literature, as well as our experience, suggests that this form of treatment can be used for women with lower ovarian reserve, in order to receive a higher number of egg cells during the stimulation, as well as in improving the blood circulation of the endometrium and more successful implantation of the embryo. Acupuncture can be used to assist in the establishment of ovulations, with spontaneous conception, but also to support the couple in the process of In vitro fertilization. Certain studies, published in Germany, found that the use of acupuncture even doubled the chances for success of In vitro fertilization, while numerous studies have not found this benefit. Although divided, studies documented around the world note that these benefits may apply in certain female population, and not a single study has gained adverse effects of acupuncture. Even if does not increase the rate of pregnancy in the process of in vitro fertilization, acupuncture leads to a reduction of stress in women and improves the general condition, which is also a factor to be taken into account.
In the presence of high-quality embryos, even at the stage of blastocyst, the success is around 50% in the best clinics, in spite of chro-
mosomal abnormalities of the embryo, in a number od cases a disorder of the process of hatching(hatching) of embryos is mentioned
as the reason for the failure.
