Certain states in the treatment of infertility require medicamentous stimulating of ovaries to "produce" one or more follicles that reach the stage of ovulation, i.e. the creation of a mature egg cell.
This primarily refers to the existence of polycystic ovary syndrome and other conditions that cause the absence of spontaneous ovulation. Also, stimulation of ovulation is used in almost all the procedures of assisted reproduction, both for the purposes of intrauterine insemination and for the purposes of in vitro fertilization cycle.
Modern medicine requires that any form of infertility treatment, including the "simplest" stimulation of ovulation, is carried out only after the complete and comprehensive diagnosis of infertility is primarily conducted, thus avoiding the possibility of complications or failed and hopeless treatment.
There are numerous medicaments for the stimulation of ovulation. We distinguish stimulating the development of one or two follicles for ovulation induction needs in anovulatory cycles, or for cycles of intrauterine insemination, as well as controlled ovarian hyperstimulation, i.e. the development of significantly higher number of follicles for In vitro fertilization purposes.
Mostly, primarily is used oral anti-estrogen, popular Clomiphene Letrozol (Femara), which is taken at a specified schedule, producing the development of several follicles. Like all medicines, it requires further monitoring of the cycle by a physician.
In situations when stimulation of ovulation is not successful using mentioned drugs, as well as in situations when we want a larger number of follicles (such as In-vitro fertilization cycles), ovulation stimulation is carried out by injections of gonadotrophic hormones in various pharmacological formulations and in various doses, depending upon the necessity.
Once again we note that the medical supervision, preferably subspecialists of sterility, is required during ovarian stimulation of the cycle.
Intrauterine insemination is a method of medically assisted reproduction, which does not involve In vitro fertilization, but helps a couple in spontaneous achieving of pregnancy. The procedure is simple, safe and often successful in helping the infertile couple.
